PostSubject: tourette syndrome Thu Dec 11, 2008 3:44 am

i was diagnosed when was in sixth grade, took meds for it till about eigth. sympotoms at time were neck popping about under periods of extreme stress. stopped the meds and took a summer of neurofeed back before high school, symptom and medication free ever since. the diagnosis prevented me from joining marine corp in 2006 after graduation, recruiter told me that only way i could join any branch was if it turns out i was misdiagnosed. will it affect my chances for joining local law enforcement. im 21 now, still symptom free

It depends. Below is an example of one police department's requirements.

With respect to Tourette Syndrome (TS), a candidate is disqualified
if he or she has:
Within the last year, been receiving treatment with medications
for TS;
After age 14, experienced episodes of impulsive aggressive
behaviour or rage that are much greater than warranted by the
provoking event;
Pronounced motor and/or vocalized tics that are more forceful
than comparable normal voluntary movements or sounds and
occur more often than once per hour; and,
Intrusive obsessive thoughts and/or compulsive behaviours
that last more than one hour per day and/or cause difficulties
or delays in making decisions and/or taking timely action.

Good luck!
